Fiona Rae

Fiona Rae

Hong Kong-born British artist Fiona Rae rose to prominence in the early 90s, after participating in Damian Hurst's 1988 Freeze exhibition, which effectively launched a generation of prominent British artists who would later become known as the YBAs (Young British Artists).

She was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1991 at Tate Britain (eventually won by Anish Kapoor), and went on to exhibit in Charles Saatchi's 1997 Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy. In 2002 she officially became a fellow of the RA and was later appointed a Tate Artist Trustee between 2005 and 2009, going on to be appointed the first female Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy in 2011.

Her vibrant works aim to challenge and expand on modern conventions of painting, mixing aspects of cubism and abstract expressionism and using fractured visual elements often complimenting the social critiques inherent in her titles.
