Ursula Hitz is a Swiss artist and designer known for her meticulous, and iconic typographic maps of some of the world’s best-known cities. Born in rural Switzerland, she has cultivated diverse talents ranging from typography and graphics to cheese making. Since moving to London more than a decade ago, Ursula’s work has focused on location and place, being interested in the ways that letters capture not only the dimensions of a place, but its personality too. ‘I love becoming fixated on their intricacies, before taking a step back and seeing a bigger structure evolve,’ she explains. ‘Unlike regular maps, mine don’t focus on streets or buildings. Instead, they build an organic texture of words that grow from the centre – in the way that most cities have grown.’ Her work has been exhibited, featured and reviewed both online and in numerous selected London galleries and her charming and creative ‘Letters & Numbers’ fonts are also available via several font websites including Fontspring.
